During the 1980s I was active in the social documentary movement in South African, being a founder member of the Afrapix collective. In these times photography was seen as ‘cultural work’ and most of my efforts were in the service of trade unions and other civil society organisations. My photographs appeared in the anti-apartheid exhibitions and publications of the day. While much of my photography documented ordinary lives under apartheid, I also worked on more personal projects. Another day in the suburbs was an extended essay with interviews charting white Johannesburg’s response to the emergencies of the late 1980s.

My book Quiet Moments in the Struggle narrates the experience of the 1980s in images and text. It is available as an e-book or pdf at Blurb.
