no_turning_webI joined the SACHED Trust, a South African non-profit organization, in the wake of the 1976 Soweto uprising, to work on People's College. This was an educational supplement to the newspaper Weekend World, which provided
educational materials to out-of-school youth. Formal courses covered the school curriculum; non-formal courses supported students working towards accountancy and other certificates; and the informal section provided general educational material.

Under the guidance of subject experts I wrote a 26-part series on health care, courses on chemistry and biology and articles on African history and current affairs. The Health Care course covered nutrition, prevention of childhood diseases, sex education and other public health topics.


When Weekend World was closed down by the apartheid government, the newspaper and supplement were reinvented as Post and Learning Post, respectively and the health care and science courses continued.

During my ten-year association with SACHED I wrote for its many publications including the post-literacy magazine, The Reader, and the children's magazine, Upbeat. After the banning of the newspaper supplements I also began producing educational audiovisual materials, including side and tape shows and comics. 

Throughout the 1980s I worked consistently for civil society organizations such as trade unions, human rights organizations, literacy projects and other educational NGOs. In this period I also wrote and edited for the nascent women's movement within the trade unions. Working Women, a book of interviews, text and photographs was a SACHED project published by Ravan Press in South Africa and also published in the UK and Netherlands. More...

Audiovisual materials included a series of slide/tape shows for the Human Awareness Programme (HAP). In the early 1990s I began working on educational films with interactive booklets, which I researched and wrote.  More...
